“Masterpiece”

Definition Series

Installation, 2022

Canvas board, Projector

The humour of my 'Definition' series continues, with a certain word becoming the subject of the work. The inspiration for this work comes from my own understanding of master, there is often a barrier to being called a master in a profession, not to mention that a masterpiece is a compliment that transcends generations, and there is even a level of consensus that a work can be called a masterpiece. Yet can I call myself a 'master' since I have already got a Master's degree, just as Dr.s can change their prefix to Dr. once they have earned it? Such a definition makes me think that the title is like a halo, reflecting the social or professional status of the person and that the words or work of the person carries a certain value. Even a simple and quick piece of work is more likely to be noticed by the public. So I created this work. No one can deny that an art piece from a master's is not a masterpiece, and of course, outside of the halo, it is still just a piece.
