Remote Controller (Filial Piety)
Moon and Navel Series
Ready-made, 2024
This piece was conceived and created during a Community Residency hosted by Queer Britain and Queer China UK. In discussions around identity, one topic that’s difficult to avoid is family. The influence of one’s family of origin and culture remains deeply rooted, even when physical distance grows. This connection often reminds me of a remote control — specifically, one wrapped in a plastic cover, as is common in East Asian households. I've redefined the function of each button on the remote, with each one mapping the expectations of parents, illustrating the nuanced relationship between East Asian parents and children.
